“Linda is the biggest hero in this chain of champions…”

When Linda M. first came to see me in May of this year with her dog, I had no idea that the story behind her beautiful dog was so remarkable. Quite frankly, I didn’t believe her story at first - but it turned out to be true and moving.

Her dog is a 2-year-old male German Shepherd/Lab mix named Domino. Linda brought her dog to me for separation anxiety and human fear issues. You’ll better understand his behavior issues once you know the whole story.

It all started in January of 2021 when employees at the Domino Sugar Refinery in New Orleans, Louisiana spotted Domino stuck in cement at the back of the refinery. It was obvious Domino had fought mightily for hours to free himself from the drying cement, but he became exhausted and the cement won the battle as it hardened around him. He was completely trapped and alone.

The dog gods took mercy on Domino that day as all of the employees who found him were dog lovers. They instantly swung into action wielding large sledge hammers to break him free. The cement was rock hard and Domino was injured and scared - it was a long and delicate task to say the least. They were able to break him free without adding any additional significant injuries. Yes, these employees were heroes on that day, but that’s only the beginning.

A 911 effort was made to save Domino by these employees now that he was free; they immediately got him veterinary help - paid for by Domino Sugar. The veterinarians found Domino to be completely exhausted and heartworm positive with some bumps, bruises and cuts but nothing more serious than that. His rescuers could now relax a little and it was time to name him - Domino of course!

A good Samaritan all the way from Wisconsin assisted with additional medical bills by paying for his expensive heartworm treatment. Pets Going Places in Dallas, Texas stepped up and coordinated the effort to transport Domino from New Orleans all the way to Linda’s home in Addison, Texas. The chain of help for Domino continued unbroken.

This is where my client, Linda, comes in. She agreed to take Domino in as a foster in her home. When Linda laid eyes on Domino, she knew he had to be a permanent part of her life - she was going to adopt him. She saw that not only was he incredibly beautiful, but he obviously had a sweet spirit and love for life. Linda is the biggest hero in this chain of champions; she is taking him into her home for the rest of his life.

Domino has been successfully treated for heartworm and has recovered from his physical injuries. Linda and I are currently working with Domino to help him with his behavioral issues (i.e., separation anxiety and submissive fear to humans). I’m happy to report, with Linda’s hard work, Domino is making progress with his behavior issues.

I love dogs. I love people who help dogs.
